Cyber security is not to be taken lightly. If you have a website, you are ALWAYS vulnerable to malicious attacks. Early this morning I was alterted to a massive targeted campaign against WooCommerce, a plugin used on more than 600,000 websites around the world. If you are using the plugin on your site, you may be at risk. Keep a careful watch and sure up security measures immediately.
To learn more about this targeted campaign, I encourage you to read the latest blog by WordFence Security (see highlight and access link below).
If you do not have security software on your website, we recommend you install and activate a reputable program immediately. There are free and premium plugins available. At Bouzane Consulting, we use WordFence and iThemes security software on the websites we develop. As part of our services, we also keep a close watch on all malicious activity and act quickly to ensure our clients have not been compromised and that sites remain as safe as possible.
Alert from WordFence
Excerpt from WordFence Blog, July 17, 2023
The Wordfence Threat Intelligence team has been monitoring an ongoing exploit campaign targeting a recently disclosed vulnerability in WooCommerce Payments, a plugin installed on over 600,000 sites. Large-scale attacks against the vulnerability, assigned CVE-2023-28121, began on Thursday, July 14, 2023 and continued over the weekend, peaking at 1.3 million attacks against 157,000 sites on Saturday, July 16, 2023.
Not just the big guys at risk
Quite often we find that our clients assume they aren’t at risk because they are too small to warrant attention from ‘would-be’ hackers. NOT SO! Anyone with a website or any form of online presence, regardless of the size (individual, micro or small businesss, hobbyists, non-profit organizations, major corporations), is a target and at risk.
Measures to mitigate risk
- regularly scan your site for malware
- block attempts to inflitrate
- perform regular site backups
- block spam and phishing attempts
- immediately update outdated software
